CompUSA
is a retailer and reseller of consumer electronics, technology products
and computer services.
CompUSA also carries more than 2,000 software
titles. Many of the stores include classroom training facilities.
CompUSA's reports are mainly numerical so far, showing figures like
the number of reviews and conversions, but Fernandez is looking
forward to deeper analysis. The conversion rate is one of the real
benefits of community reviews, according to Bazaarvoice. CompUSA
apparently enacted this shipping-address policy without consulting
their own bank to ensure that the policy could be carried out by
those customers closest to them. Customers with a private-label
credit card are the closest things a major retailer has to a captive
audience.
CompUSA owned ALL of its merchandise though the day
we closed. All the liquidator was there for was to keep operations
moving smoothly during the closing. CompUSA is reported to begin
selling NetSuite in its retail stores. The retailer currently sells
products like QuickBooks and Act!, which companies tend to outgrow
when they are expanding. CompUSA is somewhat defunct and they are
not servicing my laptop to my expectations. Foremost, my laptop had
issues from the day I had purchased it.
CompUSA is not going
out of business. They are closing SOME of their stores. CompUSA had
no legal responsibility. All of the attention has been diverted away
from the liquidator — all of the drama should have been, “Will they
pay?” Did we find eager reports from Terry Heaton about the status
of his claim with the liquidator? CompUSA did not specify the source
of the cash investment.
CompUSA serves consumer retail,
small-to-medium businesses, corporate, government, and education
customers. Founded in 1984 as Soft Warehouse in Addison, Texas, a
northern suburb of Dallas, by Errol Jacobson and Michael Henochowicz,
the company began national expansion in 1985 with its first
megastore opening in Atlanta, Georgia. Jacobson and Henochowicz led
a team of young managers including Elizabeth Greenwood and Pat
Wyckoff who were skilled in retail, distribution, logistics, service
and merchandising. |

Managed by Greenwood, the first satellite office opened in Tampa,
Florida. Greenwood and Wyckoff soon joined forces with Cheryl Stoddard
to open the Atlanta Georgia store. The concept was copied in Dallas, and
spurred the debut of stores in Houston and Southern California. Others
involved in the process included Jeff Deskin, Randy Kilmer, James Ross,
Melanie Collins, Dewey Thoes. In 1991, under the direction of Chief
Executive Officer Nathan P. Morton, the company's name was changed to
CompUSA, and the company became publicly traded on the New York Stock
Exchange. While under Morton's leadership, CompUSA grew to over $2
billion in revenues. Morton resigned in 1993 after a falling out with
the board of directors.
Currently based in Miami,
Florida, CompUSA operates 17 retail stores in Florida, Texas, Illinois,
and Puerto Rico. Eleven former Tiger Direct locations and two new
locations were brought under the CompUSA banner in the summer of 2008
for a total of 30 stores.
Until its reorganization, CompUSA, Inc.
was a wholly-owned subsidiary of U.S. Commercial Corp S.A.B. de C.V.[2]
and indirectly controlled by a common shareholder, Carlos Slim. On
December 7, 2007, an affiliate of liquidation firm Gordon Brothers Group
bought the company. Systemax purchased the CompUSA brand, 16 retail
locations and other company assets in January, 2008.
